Madison White claims award for second consecutive week.
IRVING, Texas – For the second weekend in a row, Madison White was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week for her performance in goal.
The keeper all but clinched the award in Thursday's Big 12 opener when she shut out No. 18 Oklahoma State in her first career start. White made three saves in the upset win, including a spectacular leaping effort to punch a Cowgirl shot over the cross bar.
White's first start came after she jumped into a tense road game at No. 22 South Florida when keeper Marissa Zucchetto exited due to injury. The move was sudden and left her no time to think before going and making seven incredible saves to be named TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week. Heading into Big 12 play, however, the freshman had a week to think about the upcoming game knowing she would be starting in net. Still, any nerves were calmed when she took the field.
"At the beginning I still felt the butterflies," she said postgame Thursday. "But once things got going, I got comfortable. Once I got on the field for 10 minutes, I just got comfortable and played my game."
She also gave credit to the Tech back line, which has now combined with the keepers to shut out five opponents in 2019, saying, "Without that back line, I couldn't do what I do."
The Rockwall, Texas, native followed up Thursday's performance with a strong one Sunday in the Red Raiders' draw with Oklahoma. White held the Sooners scoreless for 84 minutes before Kaylee Dao snuck in the tying goal, but she kept the opponents off the board for the remainder of regulation and all 20 minutes of overtime to give her team the chance for the golden goal win. Despite it not coming and the game resulting in a 1-1 tie, White led Tech to a four-point opening weekend while logging 200 minutes in net.
White is the first Red Raider since Jessica Fuston in 2010 to be named Big 12 Freshman of the Week in consecutive weeks. She won the first award after scoring the game-winner to lift Tech over Kansas for the first time in seven years, then recorded a hat trick against Iowa State the following weekend.
Texas Tech will play at Iowa State Thursday for its lone game of the weekend. First touch is set for 7 p.m. in Ames.
