Red Raiders Earn Top Seed at Big 12 Match Play Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas – Top-seeded Texas Tech will compete at the 2019 Big 12 Match Play Tournament this weekend at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas after opening its season with a pair of tournament victories at The Carmel Cup and Iverness Intercollegiate.
The Red Raiders are currently at No. 3 in the Golfweek statistical ratings and No. 6 in the Golfweek/Bushnell Coaches Poll after the wins to begin the season. Tech, which is the No. 1 seed in the tournament, begins the competition on Friday with a match against No. 8 TCU before playing No. 9 Iowa State in the afternoon. In the first match, the Red Raiders will be represented by Sandy Scott, Kyle Hogan, Ludvig Aberg, Garrett Martin, Markus Braadlie and Andy Lopez.Â
This is the second year of the event as the Big 12 was the first conference to host its own Match Play tournament in 2018, utilizing the format that determines the NCAA Men's Golf national champion. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. for first-round play with the second round of match play at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Two more matches will be played on Saturday and Sunday with the final round set for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Teams are ranked and seeded 1-10 based on Big 12 coaches' rankings. The tournament will be played over three days consisting of Pool Play for two-and-a-half days (five sessions) followed by a Final Round the afternoon of day three. Match Play will be conducted during all rounds. Seeding for the tournament is ranked: Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Kansas, TCU, Iowa State and Kansas State.
Houston Oaks will play out at 7,007 yards and par 71 for the event.
During the Pool Play portion, each team will play matches during four sessions and have one session off. Teams will get three points for a win and one point for a draw. During the Final Round of Day 3, the Final Match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A competing against the team with the highest point total from Pool B. The Third Place Match will be between the teams with the second highest point totals from their respective pools. Each team will participate during the Final Afternoon.
The Golfweek scoring rating has the Red Raiders at 68.62 in the system with Georgia Tech at No. 1 with a 68.41 and Wake Forest at 68.45. Individually, Lopez is ranked No. 11 in the Golfweek ratings (67.62) after beginning the season with a tournament win and a third-place finish. He is currently the top-ranked player in the Big 12. Tech currently 7-0 against top-25 opponents this season and 11-0 against teams in the top-50. Oklahoma is fourth in the ratings followed by North Carolina.
Texas Tech previously soared up the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll to No. 6 after opening the season by winning The Carmel Cup and the Iverness Intercollegiate to begin the 2019-20 season. The Red Raiders were ranked No. 18 in the preseason poll before earning a pair of first-place team titles and individual championships from Scott and Lopez.
Scott shot 14-under-par for a one-stroke individual championship and the Red Raiders were at 16-under to complete a comeback for The Carmel Cup team title at the season-opening tournament at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Scott closed out the win by shooting 7-under in the final round without a bogey on Sept. 1. Texas Tech earned the Iverness Intercollegiate team title earlier this week after recording a final round of 12-under-par on Tuesday and Lopez securing a co-championship at 2-under-par at the 54-hole tournament at the Iverness Club. Lopez, who played the tournament as an individual and was coming off a third-place finish at The Carmel Cup, earned the first collegiate win of his career after shooting 73-68-70 – 211 with 12 birdies.

Texas Tech will return from Houston with one fall tournament remaining on its schedule coming at the Tavistock Collegiate from Oct. 20-22 in Orlando, Florida. The Red Raiders finished fourth at last year's Tavistock with Scott earning a top-10 finish at the event.
