Texas Tech Opens ITA Regionals with Strong Showing

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team got off to a strong start to the ITA Texas Regional Championships on Thursday. The squad combined to go 9-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles on the day. Five Lady Raiders are alive in the main draw round of 32 in singles, while all three Tech doubles teams are in the doubles round of 32.

Thursday's action started in doubles with sophomore Olivia Peet and Margarita Skriabrina opening the weekend with an 8-3 win over Houston's Ndindi Ndunda and Azul Pedemonti to advance to the round of 32. The Texas Tech duos of Reagan Collins and Isa Di Laura, and Lisa Mays and Nell Miller both received byes.

In singles, five of six Lady Raiders advanced into the second round with wins in their first singles matches of the tournament. Di Laura struck first with a straight-set, 7-6(2), 6-3 win over Texas State's Andrea Fuchs, followed by a 7-5, 6-0 win by the No. 29 seed Miller over Petra Kaszas of Sam Houston State. No. 13 seed Lisa Mays handled Ryli Ruffin of Sam Houston State, 6-2, 6-0, to advance. Peet, seeded 16^th, dropped Ndunda, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. The No. 9 seed Skriabrina received a bye to the second round, while Collins came up short to Texas State's Hana Kvapilova.

Di Laura followed up her first-round win with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over UTSA's Laura Cabrera. She will take on Diae El Jardi of Rice in the round of 32 on Friday afternoon. Miller will face No. 4 seed and 96^th-ranked Victoria Smirnova of Rice on Friday for a spot in the round of 16 after a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hala Khaled Badwy in her second match of the tournament.

Skriabrina notched her first singles win of the weekend quickly in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Josefina Cassara of Texas State. She'll face Texas A&M's McBryde on Friday in the round of 32. Mays knocked off SMU's Tiffany Hollebeck, 6-4, 6-2, to set up a meeting with TCU's Polk on Friday. Peet defeated TCU's Chloe Hule in the round of 64, 6-3, 6-2, and will take on No. 25 seed Yamalapalli of Sam Houston State for a spot in the round of 16.

Action in College Station will continue on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with two rounds of doubles play. Singles will begin at 1:30 p.m.
