Texas Tech Sweeps Week 10 Conference Awards
October 29, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Red Raiders claim all three Big 12 weekly awards.
IRVING, Texas – A huge sweep of a big road weekend in hand, Texas Tech has now swept the Big 12's weekly awards, the conference announced Tuesday.
"It's always an honor to be recognized by your league and especially by a league as competitive as ours," said head coach Tom Stone. "You look around this league and there are so many great players that have great moments. We were fortunate this week to have several players step up in one big two-game weekend."
Tech was led off by Defensive Player of the Week Madison White, who has been recognized in five of her six weeks on the field this season. White's fifth nod has her tied for the Big 12 record in most selections in a single season. White stopped 13 of 14 shots (93 percent) she faced this weekend, with the only one finding its way to the back of the net an own goal at Texas. Her 13 saves included 10 in tough conditions at Baylor, where she shut out the Bears as Tech won its first match in Waco since 2007. It is the first time a Tech keeper has had to make as 10 or more saves in a game since 1996.
The other two awards went to first-time recipients. Charlotte Teeter garnered Offensive Player of the Week thanks to the first three-point game of her career against Texas. Teeter was relentless all game as Tech tried desperately to find an equalizer in the waning moments in Austin. She found it none too soon, heading in the tying goal with just over a minute left on the clock. In overtime, she would find freshman Macy Schultz on a combination play at the top of the box for the golden goal.
Schultz's game-winner was enough for the Big 12 to recognize her as its Freshman of the Week. The Timnath, Colo., native struck the winner beautifully, dragging the Longhorns keeper out of net before chipping it over her to send Tech back to Lubbock with six huge points on the weekend. Schultz's score – her third of the season – places her in a tie with Hannah Anderson for most on the team among the freshmen. Tech's freshmen have now netted 10 goals on the year.
The Red Raiders will play their regular season finale Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex with a Big 12 title on the line. To determine the conference champion, the result in Lubbock will be compared with what happens in Stillwater, as current standings leader Oklahoma State plays Baylor at 7 p.m. as well. Should the Red Raiders win and the Cowgirls lose, Tech will claim its first-ever regular season title. Should Tech win and OSU draw, the two would be named co-champions.
Thursday's first touch in Lubbock is set for 7 p.m. Tickets for the match are available here. The game will be broadcasted on Fox Sports Southwest.
