White Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
October 08, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Madison White picks up third-straight weekly Big 12 recognition.
IRVING, Texas – For three straight weeks, Madison White has found her name headlining the Big 12's weekly awards list. The freshman goalkeeper secured herself the honor of Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after a 108-minute shutout performance of Iowa State in her first career conference road game.
Â
"We've been playing really well as a team and it's been great to contribute to that," White said. "Having the defense in front of me supporting me makes me more confident in goal each week."
Â
White kept an empty net for the second straight overtime bout, holding Oklahoma scoreless during the bonus period last week in Lubbock. She has now surrendered just two goals in over 376 minutes in goal. That qualifies for a 0.48 goals-against average, which places her at the top of the conference, right ahead of the 0.61 GAA owned by injured Tech keeper Marissa Zucchetto.
Â
"Over the last few weeks, Madi has displayed poise and extreme competitiveness to her command in goal," said associate head coach Gibbs Keeton, who oversees the keepers group. "Our team and staff are elated that her game day presence has been inspiring to our team. Like many of our players, Madi was ready to help us when called upon."
Â
White has already Big 12 Freshman of the Week twice, the first on the heels of her clutch, off-the-bench performance at No. 22 USF, and the second for a shutout of No. 18 Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener, which was her first career start. The back-to-back awards made her the first Tech freshman to earn the recognition in consecutive weeks since Jessica Fuston in 2010.
Â
White will travel with the Tech squad to Morgantown, W.V., for a Thursday night shootout with the Mountaineers. The team will then head back home for a Sunday afternoon contest with Kansas, set for 1 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest.
