Davis, Hiatt Named All-Americans

United Soccer Coaches tabs Kirsten Davis and Cassie Hiatt as program’s third and fourth All-Americans.
NEW ORLEANS – With the United Soccer Coaches' announcement of its All-America picks Thursday, Texas Tech gained its third and fourth All-Americans in program history. Kirsten Davis was named a First Team forward, while Cassie Hiatt made the Third Team as a defender.
Davis' selection to the First Team makes her the youngest to do so. She joins Janine Beckie (2012-15) as the lone Tech forwards to be named All-Americans.
The junior from St. Louis, Mo., capped off a dominant third season with 16 goals and six assists, making her the perfect candidate for the Big 12's Offensive Player of the Year award. She arrived at her 16 goals – just two shy of the program record – after a blazing beginning to the season that saw her knock in nine in her first nine games. It was the fastest scoring start ever for a Red Raider, and it brought her to national prominence as one of the top forwards in collegiate soccer.
Davis would score five more times in Big 12 play, including both of Tech's tallies at Baylor as they took down the Bears in Waco for the first time since 2007. She got after the Bears again in tournament play, scoring the game-winner in the quarterfinal of the Big 12 Championship. Her six game-winning goals tied the program record for most in a single season.
Davis, who has also been recognized post-season as a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, credited her team with helping her perform at such a level this season.
"I am honored to receive this award, but nothing like this is possible without great teammates and great coaches," she said. "I am so thankful to be part of this team. I wish the year had ended differently, but I am so proud of what this team accomplished. I cannot wait for next year."
On the opposite end of the field, Hiatt was busy being one of the country's most lockdown center backs. The sophomore from Parker, Colo., is the second Tech defender to make the All-America list, joining three-time honoree Jaelene Hinkle (2011-14).
Hiatt, who like Hinkle is a product of powerhouse youth club Real Colorado, started in all but two games after being named to the Preseason All-Big 12 list. She lived up to the hype, helping a Red Raider back line – on which she was the only returner – to 10 shutouts and a conference-low 18 goals against. Hiatt's prowess at center back was instrumental to Tech holding Big 12 foes to merely five goals in conference play. For the campaign, she was named a First Team All-Big 12 and First Team All-Midwest selection.
Hiatt, who last season started alongside three seniors on the back line – all of whom now play in the pros – credited their mentorship to her development into an All-American.
"This award is such an honor to receive," Hiatt said. "Even though it recognizes my individual accomplishments this year, none of it would be possible without the seniors in the back line last year teaching me what they did. The culture of the team has developed so much over my two years, and I am so grateful to have played a role in what we did in 2019."
