Red Raiders add Argentina National Team defender as mid-year transfer.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone announced Thursday the signing of Luana Muñoz, a two-time NJCAA All-American from Tyler Junior College. Munoz, a defender who has experience with the Argentina National Team, will come to Lubbock with junior eligibility.
Â
"Luana is a player in which everyone will immediately recognized her competitive drive and passion for the game," said assistant coach Gibbs Keeton, who led the recruiting effort for Muñoz. "Adding a player of her caliber to complement our current team will help us start the 2019 campaign right where we ended last season – as one of the top defensive teams in the country."
Â
Muñoz was coached at Tyler by Corey Rose, whose Apache squad compiled a 47-3-1 record during her first two years. Muñoz arrived at Tyler in 2017 and started in 24 of 25 games. She tallied three goals from the back line – all of which were game-winners – and was named an NJCAA Second Team All-American. She made 15 starts last season as a sophomore, scoring one goal and assisting on five en route to earning First Team All-America honors.
Â
"Coach Corey does a great job preparing his players to make the move to Division I," said head coach Tom Stone. "We're excited to help her continue to develop her game so she can continue to perform at a high level."
Â
Muñoz's development has also been facilitated by her time with the Argentina National Team. Muñoz has played for her country since 2014. In November 2018, Argentina defeated Panama in a two-legged playoff to qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

A very important step in my career, not only as a soccer player but also as a student athlete. I'm very exited of becoming a member of this family, it is a very big challenge for me. Thank you @TexasTechSoccer for this opportunity. https://t.co/wvvl17K1rH
