Red Raiders to Compete at Desert Classic
February 21, 2019 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 18-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team is set to compete in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate this weekend at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California. The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 9 a.m. (CST) on Friday before the final round on Sunday at the 7,305-yard course in the Coachella Valley.
The Red Raiders will be represented by Sandy Scott, Ivan Ramirez, Adam Blomme, Kyle Hogan and Markus Braadlie at the tournament, while Jansen Smith is competing as an individual. The 21-team tournament includes Boise State, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Kansas, Little Rock, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Southern Utah, TCU, UC Riverside, UT Arlington, Western Carolina and is being hosted by Wyoming.
Scott enters the tournament at No. 29 in the GolfStat rankings, while Ramirez is No. 40. A senior from Colombia, Ramirez led the Red Raiders in the spring opener two weeks ago in Hawaii by shooting 7-under-par and finishing tied for 12th individually at the Amer Ari Invitational. Ramirez posted 68-73-68 for his 209 total while Blomme was 18th at the event with a 6-under-par performance. Hogan carded 4-under (T24) in Hawaii, while Scott was at 3-under after 54 holes and finished 30th. A freshman from Norway, Braadlie did not play in the tournament and will be making his spring debut on Friday morning. Â
Texas Tech, which is the top-ranked team competing in this week's tournament, opened its spring season with a sixth-place finish at the Amer Ari Invitational after a fall campaign where the Red Raiders finished second at the Showdown in the Rockies and fourth at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. This week's tournament is the second event in California this year for the Red Raiders who began the 2018-19 calendar year at The Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, California. Ramirez led TTU in that event, finishing at 8-under and in ninth overall.
Scott and Ramirez have been named to the first spring Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking for the 2019 matches that were released last week. Scott, a senior from Scotland, is No. 6 on the International list and Ramirez is at No. 9. Using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component. The remaining six men's and women's spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The next Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking will be announced February 28.
Texas Tech will continue its season next week at the Southern Highlands Masters in Las Vegas from March 3-5 before also playing at the Lake Charles Invitational (Louisiana), Aggie Invitational (College Station) and El Macero Classic (California) leading into the Big 12 Championships on April 26-28 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
