LaAdrian Waddle becomes the fourth Red Raider all-time to win multiple Super Bowl titles
LUBBOCK, Texas – LaAdrian Waddle became the fourth Red Raider all-time Sunday to win multiple Super Bowl rings after his New England Patriots topped the Los Angeles Rams, 13-3, at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Â
With the win, Waddle joins the likes of Donny Anderson, Anthony Lynn and Danny Amendola, a former teammate of his with the Patriots, as Texas Tech alums with two Super Bowl titles. Waddle won his first Super Bowl with the Patriots only two years ago to conclude the 2016 season.
Â
Waddle, in his fourth season with the Patriots, was utilized as an extra tight end on New England's lone touchdown, which came on a Sony Michel two-yard scamper up the middle with seven minutes remaining in regulation. The touchdown pushed New England to a 10-3 lead and proved to be enough in the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history.
Â
This marked the 10th-consecutive year a Red Raider has been on a Super Bowl roster and the third-straight year Waddle and the Patriots have represented the NFC. Waddle joins Amendola and Wes Welker among Red Raiders who have been part of three Super Bowl teams.
Â
Overall, a Red Raider has now won a Super Bowl title in four of the past five seasons with the lone exception coming a year ago when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Patriots. Amendola won his first Super Bowl title in 2015 followed by Louis Vasquez and the Denver Broncos winning the big game in 2016. Amendola and Waddle were both part of the Patriots' fifth Super Bowl title in 2017.
Â
The Super Bowl ring for Waddle completes a strong season among Red Raiders in the NFL after Patrick Mahomes II was named the NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year on Saturday night. Mahomes fell just short of a Super Bowl appearance in his first season as Kansas City's starter as the Patriots needed overtime to edge the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium.
Â
Tech boasted seven of its alums on playoff rosters along with Lynn, who was an NFL Coach of the Year candidate after leading the Los Angeles Chargers to the AFC Divisional round in his second year as head coach.
