Scott Shines on Opening Day at Lake Charles Invitational

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana – Texas Tech junior Sandy Scott shot 15-under-par with 14 birdies and an eagle on the opening day of the Lake Charles Toyota Invitational on Monday to take the lead after 36 holes at the Country Club at the Golden Nugget.
Scott shot 64-65 – 129 to lead the No. 10 Red Raiders who combined for a 28-under total which puts them in second place behind TCU which is at 36-under going into Tuesday's final round at the 18-team event. Tech recorded a 274-274 – 548, while the Horned Frogs are at 269-271 – 540 through two rounds.
The tournament will resume at 9 a.m. on Tuesday for the final round in Louisiana.
Scott started his day with an eagle on the par-5 first hole and would make seven birdies for his low-round of the season at 64. He would follow it by making seven more birdies in his next round that included 11 pars. Scott, who is ranked No. 24 in the nation, owns a one-shot lead of TCU's David Ravetto who shot 14-under and Hayden Springer who is at 11-under for the Horned Frogs.
Texas Tech sophomore Kyle Hogan is tied for ninth after Monday's 36 holes after shooting 70-69 – 139, while Adam Blomme and Jansen Smith both shot 70-72 – 142 which puts them in a tie for 29th. Ivan Ramirez carded a 75-68 – 143 (T3) and playing as individuals Markus Braadlie (71-70 – 141) is in 20th followed by Thomas Allkins 74-74 – 148.
Louisiana-Monroe is in third place at the tournament and nine strokes back of the Red Raiders, while UTSA is at 18-under and in fourth. Thirteen of the 18 teams in the field are under-par after two rounds where 600 birdies where made along with 24 eagles. The Red Raiders lead the field as a team with 48 birdies and finished the two rounds at 19-under on par-5 scoring and 5-under on par-4s. Hogan and Braadlie each had 11 birdies on the day, while Ramirez and Scott had the two eagles for the Red Raiders.
Scott, who had two rounds of 67 this season for his low-round, has three top-10 finishes this year and is looking to for his first tournament win with the Red Raiders. Scott was named to the Haskins Award Watch List last week and has also earned a spot on the Arnold Palmer Cup International Team. His 65 and 64 are the second time this season where he's put back-to-back sub-70 results together following a 69-68 finish at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate three weeks ago where he would finish fourth at the tournament.
The Red Raiders have two regular-season tournaments remaining after the Lake Charles Invitational with the Aggie Invitational on April 6-7 in College Station and then the El Macero Classic on April 12014 in El Macero, California. The tournaments will lead into the Big 12 Conference Championships on April 26-28 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
