Kicinski Picks Up Big 12 Honors
March 20, 2019 | Track and Field
Texas Tech thrower leads nation in discus.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech thrower Duke Kicinski was named Big 12 Men's Athlete of the Week Wednesday, the first weekly conference honor of his Tech career.
Â
Kicinski's naming of Athlete of the Week comes after an NCAA-leading discus throw at last weekend's Wes Kittley Invitational. The graduate student recorded a 207'-10" (63.34m), a distance that places him top in the country and is the furthest mark thrown by an NCAA athlete in two years. His throw has put him at second in program history, just inches behind Julian Wruck's 208'-1" (63.42m) set in 2011.
Â
Kicinski's honor marks the 32nd time a Red Raider has been named Outdoor Men's Athlete of the Week since the award was introduced in 2002. Tech has dominated the weekly outdoor awards compared to the rest of the conference, with Texas the next closest at 21 winners.
Â
Kicinski and the rest of the Red Raiders will host their first home meet of the season Friday and Saturday at the Fuller Track and Field.
