Red Raiders set to defend title at First Bossier Spring Classic.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's spring season will continue Saturday with a match against the reigning Southeastern Conference Champions, LSU, at the First Bossier Spring Classic. The exhibition will take place in Bossier City, La., outside of Shreveport.
The Red Raiders are three-time winners of the First Bossier Spring Classic, taking the trophy for the first time in 2015 after a 3-1 win over LSU. The next spring, they beat Northeastern by a score of 6-0 for the win. Last season, Tech retained the trophy with a draw against the Tigers, 1-1. The Red Raiders' mission to keep the hardware for a fourth consecutive year will once again run through LSU.
Hailing from the SEC – the second-toughest conference in the country in 2018, behind the Big 12 – the Tigers won 13 games, including seven in SEC play. They survived three rounds of games in the SEC Tournament to make it to the title match, winning two and advancing on another in penalties. Penalties also decided the championship, where they edged out Arkansas after the teams failed to break the 1-1 tie through two periods of overtime. Now under the leadership of assistant coach Carl Goody after 14-year head coach Brian Lee left for Rice, the Tigers are seeking a return to success in the SEC after compiling just nine wins from 2015-17.
The Red Raiders and Tigers have met in the regular season twice in the history of their programs, with their last encounter coming nearly 20 years ago in 2000. The Tigers took the match, 2-1, in Baton Rouge. Five years prior in 1995, Tech took them down in Lubbock, also by a score of 2-1.
The Red Raiders have outscored collegiate opponents by a margin of 7-3 on the spring and currently hold a 2-2 record. Tech swept its first two games over West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian before dropping a close contest with TCU. The Red Raiders then traveled to Houston to play the NWSL Houston Dash.
First touch for Saturday's contest is slated for 3 p.m.
