No. 17 Softball Splits Twin Bill at New Mexico State
April 30, 2019 | Softball
The Red Raiders clinched game one but dropped game two to the Aggies.
Â
The Red Raiders outlasted the Aggies in game one and racked up 10 hits to New Mexico State's six. However, the bats fell silent in game two and Tech was out-hit 12-3 to close out the doubleheader.
Â
Breanna Russell and Heaven Burton led the squad with three hits apiece while Taylor Satchell and Karli Hamilton were the other Red Raiders to record multiple hits on the day. Russell and fellow sophomore Trenity Edwards both utilized the long ball and Hamilton and Burton both collected triples.
Â
With the split, Tech moves to 36-13 overall. Sophomore pitcher Erin Edmoundson earned the win in game one and equaled her win total from 2018 in her 17th victory of the season. Missy Zoch took the loss in game two and dropped to 15-9 on the year.
Â
GAME 1 – Texas Tech 9, New Mexico State 5
For the sixth consecutive game, the Red Raiders jumped out on the board first. Tech produced a base runner in the first inning, but it was not until the second that the Red Raiders plated a run. Russell kicked off the inning with a single up the middle and a sacrifice bunt from Peyton Blythe moved the sophomore over to second.
Â
On a 1-2 count, Zoe Jones brought in Tech's first run of the game when she snuck an RBI single through the right side of the field and Russell came sliding home to put Tech up, 1-0. The Red Raiders added onto their lead in the third when a sacrifice fly from Russell gave Tech a 2-0 lead.
Â
However, New Mexico State took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the inning after they strung together three free bases, two hits and one Red Raider error off Edmoundson in her 19th start of the season.
Â
An RBI double from Taylor Satchell tied things up at three runs apiece in the top of the fourth, but the Aggies reclaimed the lead, 4-3, when Shelby Shultes lifted a solo shot over the left-center wall.
Â
Serving as the catalyst in a six-run inning, Edwards ignited the Tech lineup in the top of the fifth with a game-tying, solo homer – her 12th of the season – that soared well over the left-field wall. Two walks and a single from Blythe loaded the bases and a two-out walk to Satchell brought in the go-ahead run for the Red Raiders.
Â
With the bases still juiced, Hamilton unleashed a base-clearing triple – her seventh this year – and Burton followed up with a triple of her own to give Tech a commanding 9-4 advantage.
Â
New Mexico State recovered ground in the bottom half of the fifth when a solo homer from Victoria Castro made it a four-run game, but Edmoundson limited the damage with a fly ball to right field.Â
Â
Zoch entered the circle in relief in the bottom of the sixth and worked her way out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam with a pair of timely strikeouts to hold Tech's four-run lead. The Aggies tried to make a late comeback again in the final frame, but Russel dug up a ball from third and secured the 9-5 win with a strong throw to first.
Â
Edmoundson picked up four strikeouts through 5.1 innings while Zoch tallied three in 1.2 innings of work.
Â
GAME 2 – New Mexico State 8, Texas Tech 2
The Red Raiders' bats struggled in game two and, after a silent top half for the Tech offense, New Mexico State struck first thanks to a solo home run off Zoch in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
Russell, who finished the game 2-for-3 with one home run and a double, evened up the game at one run apiece in the top of the second with a leadoff home run that sailed half-way up the trees that lined the fence at NM State Softball Complex.
Â
However, the change of momentum was short-lived as a two-run home run by New Mexico State's Kayla Bowen swung the lead back towards the Aggies, 3-1. Neither team was able to score in the third and New Mexico State extended its lead, 4-1, after a two-hit bottom of the fourth.
Â
Edmoundson entered the circle relief for the final two outs of the fourth and the Aggies continued to put pressure on the Red Raiders. Five runs in the fifth, produced by three singles, two walks, one double and one triple, extended New Mexico State's lead, 8-1.
Â
With a possible run-rule looming, Edmoundson got herself out of a bases-loaded situation with a fly ball and key strikeout to send Tech back to the plate.
Â
The Red Raiders put up a fight in the top of the sixth when Burton started the inning with a walk. With two outs, Russell came through once again and drilled an RBI double down the left-field line to cut into the Aggies' lead, 8-2.
Â
The Tech defense held strong and posted its second scoreless inning in the bottom of the sixth, but the Red Raiders were unable to overcome the six-run deficit and dropped game two of the doubleheader, 8-2.
Â
