LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced an addition to his 2019 signing class Tuesday as Atlanta native Dequanteous Watts signed a National Letter of Intent with the university.
Â
Watts, a 6-2, 175 pound defensive back, committed to the Red Raiders over a slew of other power-five offers, including the likes of Boston College, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia among others.
Â
Watts ranked as one of the top athletes in the state of Georgia after totaling 49 tackles, six interceptions and nine pass breakups as a senior this past season for Maynard Jackson High School in Atlanta. He also returned a kick for a touchdown en route to Class 5A All-State honors by the Georgia Sports Writers Association.
Â
Watts, the third defensive back to sign since Wells' hire, was ranked as a consensus three-star prospect by the likes of 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN. He was listed as the No. 65 cornerback in the country by Rivals and the No. 61 ranked player in the state of Georgia.
Â
Watts becomes the 19th member of Tech's 2019 signing class, joining a talented group of future Red Raiders that signed either this past December or in February. The entire signing class is expected to arrive on campus in June.
