Scott Earns All-Big 12 Honors
June 03, 2019 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior Sandy Scott has earned All-Big 12 Team honors after a season where he won one tournament, secured five top-5 finishes and completed the campaign at No. 16 in the Golfstat national player rankings.
A Scotland native, Scott's all-conference selection is the first in his career and comes after he shot 5-under-par at the Big 12 Conference Championship to finish fifth overall. He finished the regular season with a tournament victory at the El Macero Classic which followed a runner-up showing at the Lake Charles Invitational where he shot 13-under. Scott recorded 10 sub-70 rounds in his junior season and finished with a program-record 70.2 scoring average.
"This is a very deserving honor for Sandy," said Texas Tech associate head coach Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen. "He's been a rock for our team with his consistent play all year. Some of the highlights include leading his team to a couple of wins down the stretch this season, and also securing his first individual trophy. We've seen several special things out of Sandy this year."
Scott is the 15th All-Big 12 selection in program history and is the first to earn All-Big 12 and All-Big 12 Tournament in the same season since Nil Floren and Chris Ward in 2010. Scott's season of accomplishments include being named to the PING All-Region team, Academic All-Big 12, Haskins Award Watch List and a selection to the Arnold Palmer Cup International Team. His season was highlighted by the win at the El Macero Classic where he shot 75-66-72 – 213 (3-under) for his first collegiate victory. The win came after a second-place showing in Louisiana where he shot 64-65-74 – 203 for the 13-under scorecard. At the Big 12 Championship, Scott finished at 5-under (69-70-66 – 205) at The Greenbrier.
With a 70.2 scoring average, Scott tops the previous TTU record held by Clement Sordet who finished with a 70.9 average in the 2014-15 season for the Red Raiders. Oscar Floren ranks third and fourth, with a 71.2 average in 2006-07 and 71.5 in 2005-06.
"We've been proud to see his improvement over the last couple of years," Bjerch-Andresen said. "He has improved several skills in the game, but in my opinion, most of his improvement has come down to his increased sense of ownership over his game and his mind. Â He wants to be great, and he wants what's best for this team. We're very lucky to have him."
Along with Red Raider teammate Ivan Ramirez, Scott will be back in competition at the Arnold Palmer Cup International Team this weekend at the prestigious event that will be played at The Alotian Club in Arkansas. The event is scheduled for Friday-Sunday and will be a Ryder Cup-style competition.
