Trio of Red Raiders Begin Arnold Palmer Cup Play

ROLAND, Arkansas – Texas Tech junior Sandy Scott and Arnold Palmer Cup teammate Julie McCarthy earned a 3&2 win in Mixed Fourball completion while a pair of Red Raiders Ivan Ramirez and Sophia Garcia dropped a 3&1 decision on Friday on the first day at The Alotian Golf Club.
Scott and McCarthy (Auburn) won five holes in the completion for the Arnold Palmer Cup International Team. The pairing of Texas Tech golfers of Ramirez and Garcia saw the Red Raiders win three holes in the competition to start a three-day event. Scott and McCarthy gave the International Team their first points of the event and shot 6-under in a round that included an eagle on the par-5 No. 8 hole.
The International Team trails 8-4 going into Saturday which will see a Mixed Foursome format before Sunday's Singles rounds. The U.S. won three of the days first five matches to jump out to an early lead.
Scott and McCarthy will play in the opening Mixed Foursome match at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, while Ramirez and Garcia tee off at 8 a.m. for their first session match. Live streaming on Saturday will be from 10 a.m.-noon and 4-6 p.m. at this LINK.
A Scotland native, Scott earned All-Big 12 honors this season for the Red Raiders and is ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division I player rankings. Ramirez, a senior from Colombia, earned PING All-Region along with Scott this season to cap his collegiate career.
APC veterans Chandler Phillips and Mariel Galdiano opened the day for the United States, and their veteran leadership did not disappoint. The first pairing of the day cruised to a 4&3 victory after birdieing four holes on the back nine.
After the United States opened the day with a pair of victories the Internationals picked up their first point of the day after a 3&2 victory from Sandy Scott and Julie McCarthy. The duo shot six under par including an eagle on the Par 5 8th to earn the International's opening point.
With the United States leading in the middle part of the afternoon, they picked up a hard-fought tie after Will Gordon drilled a 20-foot putt on the 18th to tie the match. Gordon reached the green in two shots on the 505-yard Par 4 18th before completing the comeback with his long par putt.
