Hall Strong in Long Jump on Final Day in Des Moines
July 28, 2019 | Track and Field
DES MOINES, Iowa – Texas Tech rounded out its final day at the USATF Championships Sunday. The day was highlighted by Justin Hall, who continued to use the momentum from gaining All-American status for the first time in his career at the NCAA Championships last month.Â
Â
Hall placed seventh in the event, turning in a top jump of 25'-10.25" (7.88m). He squeezed into the final after his 7.88m leap held down sixth place after three jumps. The distance is the second-best of his collegiate career, surpassed only by the incredible 26'-5" (8.05m) jump he turned in at nationals to secure First Team All-America status.Â
Â
"Justin did a great job out there in some rainy conditions," said Associate Head Coach James Thomas. "He had one of the best jumps of his career and proved he belonged amongst a great field. Justin had an extremely memorable 2019 season."
Â
Charles Brown also competed in the long jump in his last meet in a Tech uniform, but he was left out of the finals. Despite not earning an extra three jumps, his 25'-6.75" (7.79m) was his best since his fourth-place performance at the Big 12 Championships, which also featured a jump of 7.79m.Â
Â
Thomas also watched some of his alumni compete Sunday. JaCorian Duffield turned in a season-best in the high jump. The 2015 national champion topped at 7'-4.25" (2.24m), which was good for fourth place in a talented field of jumpers.Â
Â
"It was great seeing JaCorian start looking like his old self," said Thomas of his former jumper. "I can't wait to see him back in a USA uniform at the USA vs. Europe Match in September."
Â
Thomas will coach Duffield along with the rest of the Team USA jumpers and multis athletes at the September meet.Â
Â
On the track, Andrew Hudson ran a 20.67 in the 200m to place sixth in his heat of the semi-finals.Â
Â
In the throws ring, Seasons Usual competed in the discus for her first taste of a USATF Championship. She placed 17th.Â
