Brewer and USA Basketball Take Silver at Pan Am Games
August 10, 2019 | Women's Basketball
LIMA, Peru – Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball player Brittany Brewer and the United States women's basketball team dropped a 79-73 game to Brazil on Saturday evening to take the silver medal at the 2019 Pan American Games.
Â
Brewer and the squad went 4-1 on the week to earn the U.S. women's basketball team's 15th overall medal and sixth silver medal at the Pan Am Games since its first appearance in 1955.
Â
Brewer becomes the first Lady Raider basketball player to earn a medal for the Red, White and Blue at the Pan Am Games, after becoming the second-ever Texas Tech player to qualify for the United States' women's basketball team earlier this summer. Lady Raider legend Sheryl Swoopes made the team in 1995, but the event was canceled due to a lack of teams participating.
Â
The U.S. swept through the group stage of the tournament earlier in the week, knocking off Argentina, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Colombia to advance to the semis, where the team was met with a tough test against Puerto Rico. Team USA was able to fend off the Puerto Ricans with a late push to take the game, 62-59, and set up Saturday's meeting with Brazil.
Â
In the finals, the two teams combined for eight ties and 11 lead changes, but a fourth-quarter run from Brazil left the game just out of reach for the U.S.
Â
Among the highlights from the week was Brewer's 10-point, five-rebound game to help lead the United states in its blowout win over the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Â
Brewer was one of two Big 12 players to qualify for the United States' 12-player roster. She was one of 35 participants in the trials and one of six from the Big 12.
