Red Raiders head to Colorado for annual exhibition with Pioneers.
LUBBOCK, Texas – For the seventh consecutive season, No. 22 Texas Tech will begin its fall campaign with an exhibition at the University of Denver on Saturday.
Tech will meet the Pioneers after going 14-5-3 in 2018 and making the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in seven years. The Pioneers also made an appearance in the postseason, earning a bid after clinching its second-straight Summit League title. They will open the season as the conference favorites yet again.
"We're fortunate to play against one of the best coaches in the country every preseason," head coach Tom Stone said of his Denver counterpart, Jeff Hooker. "It's always a competitive match and a perfect way to get our fall started."
The Red Raiders are set to return the two team leaders in goals, assist, points and shots. Kirsten Davis leads the way up top for Tech, coming back for her junior season. The Second Team All-Midwest Region racked up 21 points in 2018 — good for fourth in the conference last season and second among players returning this fall. Davis netted seven goals to go with seven more assists while leading the team in shots with 68. Jade King, the other forward that will start up top, ripped 63. Nearly half of those — 30 to be exact — were on net for the second-most in the conference and most among returning players. Last year, 11 total Red Raiders found the back, with eight set to return this season.
The annual trip to Denver holds meaning for the Red Raiders, who currently have five Colorado-born players on the roster.
"We always recruit hard out of Colorado," Stone said. "Returning there every season allows our girls to play in front of their families at home."
With five Coloradans on the roster, the state is the second-most represented in the program behind Texas. Hailing from the The Centennial State are Macy Hairgrove (Castle Rock), Cassie Hiatt (Parker), Jayne Lydiatt (Colorado Springs), Amanda Porter (Littleton) and Macy Schultz (Timnath). Tech's ties to Colorado also attracted former Red Raider All-Americans Janine Beckie and Jaelene Hinkle to Lubbock.
Kickoff for the friendly is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET) at Denver's CIBER Field Saturday.
