Texas Tech primed to begin 2020 at home.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track and field will open its 2020 indoor campaign Friday at the Sports Performance Center with the Corky Classic.
Â
Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Wes Kittley's Red Raiders are returning after posting a sixth-place men's finish and 15th-place women's finish at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships. A young men's team will look to continue its streak of Big 12 Championships, this winter looking for its third-straight indoor title and fifth-straight overall conference trophy. Last year, Tech set a Big 12 record for most points scored at a championship meet with 179. The Red Raiders won by 70 points – the largest margin of victory in the history of the conference.
Â
Returning to lead the effort will be jumpers Justin Hall and Jequan Hogan, assisted by pole vaulter Brandon Bray. On the track, two-time All-Big 12 sprinter Derrius Rodgers and Jacolby Shelton will return for their second seasons in Lubbock. Transfers Gabe Oladipo (Texas A&M, throws) and Takieddine Hedeilli (Algeria, middle distance) will bolster the men's group.
Â
A veteran-laden women's group will return to chase its first-ever conference trophy after finishing second last season at home. This women's team draws its strength from the experience of last year's 200m runner-up D'Jenne Egharevba, along with Jadsia Warden and Peyton Ricks in the sprints and graduate student Nokuthula Dlamini in the distance contingent. In the field, defending pole vault champion Chinne Okoronkwo will captain the vault group with Chloe Wall as well as a jumps group that includes Chelsey Cole and returning All-American Ivy Walker.Â
Â
Tech's season officially begins Friday with the annual Corky Classic, named after legendary Texas Tech Athletics supporter and administrator Corky Oglesby. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. A reunion for all former members of the program will take place Friday evening, and those alumni will be honored Saturday prior to the day's first running event, which begins at noon.
Â
The meet will be streamed on TexasTech.TV. Tickets are available here.
