Mahomes Heads to Super Bowl After Win Over Titans
January 19, 2020 | Football
Texas Tech will now be represented in the Super Bowl for an 11th-consecutive season with the Chiefs’ win Sunday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Patrick Mahomes' rise from Texas Tech quarterback to top-10 draft selection and eventual NFL MVP added another career highlight Sunday:
Â
Starting quarterback for a Super Bowl participant.
Â
Mahomes threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 53 more yards and another score en route to leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 35-24 victory over the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium.
Â
"It's amazing, it really is," Mahomes told CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson immediately after the game. "To be here and be part of Chiefs Kingdom and to do it in Arrowhead, these people deserve it. But we're not done yet."
Â
Â
Mahomes, who will become the first quarterback from a Texas college to start a Super Bowl, pitched to Tyreek Hill for an eight-yard touchdown scamper late in the first quarter and then found Hill again on a 20-yard touchdown strike with just over four minutes until halftime.
Â
For a quarterback so known for his powerful arm, Mahomes' biggest play came via the ground Sunday as he escaped the pocket and broke a pair of tackles on his way to a 27-yard touchdown run with only 11 seconds until the half. It was the second-consecutive week he led the Chiefs in rushing.
Â
Â
The Chiefs added to their lead with a three-yard touchdown run from Damien Williams to start the fourth quarter before Mahomes provided the final dagger on a 60-yard bomb to Sammy Watkins. Mahomes threw off his back foot to find Watkins, who snuck behind the Titans' secondary to catch the dart at the 10 yard line for an easy touchdown.
Â
With the win, Texas Tech will now be represented in the Super Bowl for the 11th-consecutive season as Mahomes joins the likes of recent Red Raiders in LaAdrian Waddle, Danny Amendola, Louis Vasquez, Wes Welker and others in playing in the biggest game in professional football.
Â
Super Bowl LIV will kick off a 5:30 p.m. CT on Feb. 2 from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Television coverage will be provided on FOX.

Similar to their divisional round win over the Texans, the Chiefs were forced to overcome a double-digit deficit in the first half behind Mahomes' arm as well as his legs to clinch their first Super Bowl appearance since 1970 when Kansas City's roster featured another Texas Tech great in the late E.J.
