Tech Athletics Represented at Black Student-Athlete Summit

Ten total Texas Tech student-athletes and staff members attended the annual conference in early January
LUBBOCK, Texas – Ten student-athletes and administrators represented Texas Tech Athletics at the Black Student-Athlete Summit on Jan. 8-10, making the second-consecutive year a large group has attended the annual conference in Austin.

The summit, hosted by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas, has been held annually since its inception in 2015. The 2020 theme was "The Mental Health of Black Student-Athletes."
"This important summit annually allows our staff and student-athletes to both hear about and engage in wide-ranging conversation related to the black student-athlete experience," said Amy Heard, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Leadership Development. "Texas Tech Athletics seeks opportunities like this to ensure we are fulfilling our mission to educate, serve and grow Fearless Champions."

Attendees engaged in three days of presentations, poster sessions and student-athlete breakout sessions capped off by a candid conversation with journalist Jemele Hill and summit creator, Dr. Leonard Moore, THE Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement.

Texas Tech Athletics was represented by the following student-athletes: Adrian Frye (Football), Ja'Marcus Ingram (Football), Zech McPhearson (Football) and Tiara Williams (Track and Field).

They were accompanied by Texas Tech staff members Michelle Detwiler (J.T. & Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy), Jessica Gray (Assistant A.D./Leadership Academy), Troy Kema (Associate A.D./Texas Tech Football Player Development), Candice Laster (Marsha Sharp Center for Academics), Jamie Mujeni (Marsha Sharp Center) and Narleski Wyrick (Marsha Sharp Center).
