Mahomes Looks for Super Bowl Ring Sunday Against 49ers
January 31, 2020 | Football
Texas Tech will have three Red Raiders in Super Bowl LIV in Mahomes, Wes Welker and Kris Kocurek
LUBBOCK, Texas – Patrick Mahomes II will be one of three Red Raiders to be on the biggest stage in football Sunday when he leads his Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers.
Mahomes, making his first career Super Bowl appearance, will face two former Red Raiders who will be looking to top the gunslinger as Texas Tech greats Wes Welker is the wide receivers coach for the 49ers, while Kris Kocurek serves as defensive line coach.
Welker remains one of the most legendary figures in Texas Tech history as he set the Texas Tech career record with 5,730 all-purpose yards over his four-year career from 2000-03, right when the Red Raiders were moving to a wide-open passing offense. This is his first Super Bowl appearance as a coach after he appeared in three as a player with both the Patriots (2008, 2012) and the Broncos (2014).
Kocurek was a three-time All-Big 12 selection during his Red Raider career from 1997-00. He played two seasons in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans after being originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. He joined the coaching profession shortly after his playing career finished, serving as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech in 2003 before eventually moving to the NFL with positions with the Detroit Lions (2009-17), Miami Dolphins (2018) and now the 49ers.
The 49ers also feature another staffer with Texas Tech ties in Laura McCabe, formerly Schnettgoecke, who is an assistant athletic trainer for the organization. She joined the 49ers after serving as the athletic trainer for Tom Stone's soccer program from 2008-14.
Mahomes, though, will be the main attraction of every camera Sunday following another MVP-like season for the Chiefs. Mahomes has Kansas City in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1970 when another Red Raider great, E.J. Holub, was the starting center for the Chiefs. The late Holub is a member of both the Texas Tech Ring of Honor as well as the Chiefs Hall of Fame.
Mahomes, who will become the first quarterback from a Texas four-year college to start a Super Bowl, threw for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns with only five interceptions during the regular season before leading the Chiefs to playoff wins over both the Texans and Titans.
A win Sunday would make the Whitehouse, Texas product the youngest player in NFL history to be named NFL MVP and win a Super Bowl. Mahomes, who turned 24 this past September, was named the league's MVP following the 2018 season where he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns.
Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. CT Sunday evening from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Television coverage will be provided on FOX.
