The two-year starter at center was nominated for the first time in his career Wednesday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior offensive lineman Dawson Deaton was named Wednesday to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation's top center.
This is the first time in Deaton's career where he has appeared on the watch list as he was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the conference coaches a year ago. He was one of eight Big 12 Conference centers nominated for the watch list Wednesday.
Deaton has started each of the past 16 games at center for the Red Raiders, solidifying a Tech offensive line that currently ranks 10th nationally in fewest sacks allowed per game (0.75). Tech previously ended the 2019 season ranked second in the Big 12 after allowing only 1.5 sacks per game despite being one of the most active teams in the country through the air.
The Rimington Trophy has been presented to the nation's top center since 2000. The award is named in honor of Dave Rimington, who was a consensus first team All-American center at Nebraska from 1981-82. During that time, he became the only two-time winner of the John Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the nation's top interior lineman.
Deaton and the Red Raiders return to Jones AT&T Stadium on Oct. 24 when Tech hosts West Virginia in its annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. with coverage provided nationally on ESPN2 and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
