Lady Raider Tennis Puts Three into West Texas Open Quarterfinals

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raider tennis team had a strong opening day of the West Texas October Pro Tennis Open on Friday with three players advancing on to the event's quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals will be played Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Burgess Rushing Tennis Center.

Newcomer Kaitlin Staines was the first to advance with a 6-4, 7-6(1) victory over the tournament's fifth-seeded Maria Kononova in the round of 16. Staines will face Savannah Broadus—the top seed—on Saturday for a spot in the semis.

Freshman Olivia Mikkelson also earned a spot in the quarterfinals. Mikkelson began her day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Erica Lambrecht before her round of 16 opponent withdrew to put her into the quarters. Mikkelson will face Naomi Katz on Saturday.

Nell Miller recorded an exciting three-set victory over Kristin Young to move into the quarterfinals and set up a contest with second-seeded Andrea Villarreal.

After a tough first round loss, freshman Camryn Stepp will take on Marlie Smith in the back draw quarterfinals on Saturday at 9 a.m.
