J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy recently hosted two nights at the South Plains Food Bank
LUBBOCK, Texas – The J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy recently hosted two nights for Texas Tech staff and student-athletes to volunteer at the South Plains Food Bank on Nov. 16-17.
Â
Texas Tech staff and student-athletes came together to help the South Plains Food Bank organize food that will be distributed to families and children in the West Texas community during the upcoming holiday season.
Â
"This opportunity helped me define which values are important to me as a human being but especially as a citizen of the world," Tech freshman Pyrene Delample said. "By participating in this project, I realized how important it is to include everyone in this society. If you cannot be helped, help others."
Â
The leadership academy helped organize 103 staff members and student-athletes to complete 206 community service hours, which was an increase from last year's attendance of 69 volunteers and nearly 80 hours of service.
Â
"I'm happy we decided to expand this opportunity to two nights," said Michelle Detwiler, a graduate assistant for the leadership academy. "It gave more individuals in our department the opportunity to serve the West Texas community and build awareness of the societal problems that some individuals may face. We always look forward to having these opportunities to come together as a department to give back to the Lubbock community."
Â
Texas Tech was able to continue its participation with the South Plains Food Bank amid the COVID-19 pandemic as all volunteers were required to complete a health questionnaire prior to their arrival. Volunteers were also mandated to wear proper face coverings and practice safe distancing throughout both nights.
