Hogan to Compete at Houston Open
November 04, 2020 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Kyle Hogan is set to compete in the Vivint Houston Open starting on Thursday with a 1:05 p.m. tee time at the Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston. A Cypress native, Hogan earned an exemption to play in the tournament by winning the Maridoe Collegiate last month.
Hogan, who is playing as an amateur and in his first PGA Tour event, earned Golfweek All-American and Srixon/Cleveland All-America Scholars honors as a junior along with receiving the Dr. Prentice Guatt Postgraduate Scholarship. To earn the exemption into this week's tournament, Hogan shot 1-under-par to win the Maridoe Collegiate in Carrollton, Texas. He is currently ranked No. 14 in the PGA Tour University Rankings and will be paired with Dawie van der Walt and Isaiah Salinda during the opening round.
Hogan, who graduated in May with a degree in Finance and is now pursuing a MBA at Tech, also competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship and is the second Red Raider to compete in a PGA Tour event this fall after Sandy Scott played in the U.S. Open.
"This is pretty phenomenal and speaks to the kind of kid he is," said Texas Tech coach Greg Sands who will be his caddie this week. "He's one of the hardest working guys I've been around and is always putting in a lot of time. He was playing really well in the summer, and then like he admitted, things went a little bad at the start of the fall. That happens to every good player though. It happens to Tiger Woods. He's been able to turn things around and that speaks volumes to his confidence. I'm excited for him to have this opportunity."
Lanto Griffin won the 2019 Houston Open for his first PGA title which followed Ian Poulter, Russell Henley, Jim Herman and J.B. Holmes who have won the tournament in the past five years. Phil Mickelson won the event in 2011. Among players in the field this week are No. 1-ranked Dustin Johnson, Tyrrell Hatton and Adam Scott; Phil Mickelson, Jason Day and Viktor Hovland; Lanto Griffin, Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth; Brian Gay, Sergio Garcia and Tony Finau.
THE COURSE: Memorial Park Golf Course is known as one of the best municipal courses in the nation and is visited by more than 60,000 patrons each year. Funded by the non-profit Astros Golf Foundation, the $18.5 million project has produced the promised world-class golf course for all Houstonians and the return of the PGA Tour's Vivint Houston Open to Memorial Park for the first time since 1963.
