Red Raiders Down Longhorns on Blast by Davis

Texas Tech sinks Texas in home finale.
LUBBOCK, Texas – A second half, right-footed bomb by Kirsten Davis sent Texas Tech past rival Texas Friday night in the Red Raiders' home finale.
"We just knew we wanted to come out and give it everything we had for our last home game," said goal scorer Kirsten Davis. "Going into the Texas game, the momentum is always really high, and we know we have to fight until the end."
Davis' game-winning goal – the 12th of her career – was a stellar, top-corner blast in the 54th minute. Davis found open space after receiving a perfect ball through from Amanda Porter. The reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year put her laces through it from 25 yards out, slotting it top corner for the winner. Davis' 12th game-winner moves her into sole possession of second in program history in the category. Her 26 career goals put her sixth in school history.
"Before the game, we were saying we just have to shoot more," said Davis. "When I got around the end I knew I was shooting it."
Davis' dagger came after a back-and-forth first half between the two. A fast start led to physical midfield play as the teams settled in and fought for chances. Jade King was tremendous in her 43 minutes of action. The redshirt senior made her first start of the season after tearing her ACL last fall. She made her season debut last week at No. 12 Oklahoma State. Though her lone shot came in the 67th minute, King regularly connected with Davis and Jordie Harr up top to keep the Tech attack dangerous.
"I felt like Texas did a really good job playing at their own pace and setting the tempo of the game to suit them," Stone said. "So we flipped the script on them. We made it about our attack against their back four instead of the other way around. Once we did that, we were running downhill for a while."
Downhill was right. After Davis' goal, Tech held an 8-1 advantage on shots over the Longhorns. Davis rattled off seven shots total while putting three on goal. In 90 minutes in goal, Madison White made six saves en route to earning her second win of the season.
Tech will conclude its season Friday at Kansas State. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ at 7 p.m.
