Red Raiders Move to Top of Leaderboard in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Texas Tech women's golf team shot 5-under in the second round of play at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic to move from seventh to first place heading into Tuesday's final round.
Tech's team total of 283 ties their program mark set in the first round of the 2016 Lady Puerto Rico Classic as the second-lowest team score of any round in tournament history, dating back to 2003.
The 5-under round for the Red Raiders was the lowest round by any team in this year's competition, besting Oklahoma State's total of 285 on Sunday and leading the field by nine strokes on Monday.
Following a day in which the team went 8-over, the Red Raiders came out firing on Monday with four total birdies in the team's first five holes of play. Tech finished with 18 birdies in total on the day and have increased their total to 32 on the tournament, trailing only Purdue in that category with 34. The Red Raiders also hold the second-best scoring average on both par threes and par fours.
Tech was led by Gala Dumez and Sofia Garcia in the second round, as the pair both shot 69, the second-best individual tallies on Monday. Dumez notched a tournament-leading six birdies in the second round, including the par-three seventh, which played at a scoring average of 3.40 on Monday. Garcia narrowly trailed Dumez with five birdies of her own and both players will enter the final round in a tie for 5th. Dumez and Garcia are two shots back of the tournament-leaders who currently reside at 4-under.
Anna Dong had the second-leading score on Sunday for the Red Raiders at 2-under, besting her first round total by seven strokes. Dong currently sits in a tie for 21st.
Cecilie Nielsen and Amy Taylor both concluded Monday's round at 3-over and are tied for 49th and 24th, respectively.
Tech will enter the third round with a two-shot lead over No. 14 Oklahoma State and a four-shot margin over No. 22 Virginia Tech. In total, they are leading seven top-50 programs after 36 holes of play.
