Davis Nets Two, Red Raiders Win Spring Opener

Tech downs Abilene Christian on goals from Davis, Teeter.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech opened its spring Saturday with a 3-1 win over Abilene Christian. Returning First Team All-American and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Kirsten Davis scored two goals in the exhibition victory. Charlotte Teeter tallied a goal and assisted Davis' game-winning goal.
For head coach Tom Stone, the spring opener was a good beginning to the developmental stage of the offseason.
"I think it was good to get out there and shake the rust off," Stone said. "Mentality, attitude, aggression – those things just disappear when you play your last game in November, and you've got to get them back. Once you get them back, they're trademarks of our team. Right now, we need to get back to that stage."
Davis, fittingly, got things going for the Red Raiders, scoring in the 30th minute to put Tech up 1-0. The Wildcats, however, would have a quick answer, scoring just two minutes later to tie it up. The teams would enter halftime tied 1-1.
Ever-searching for ways to improve his team's resilience, Stone saw the deadlock at half as an opportunity for the young group.
"I wasn't cheering for them to score on us, but I certainly wasn't bothered," he said. "This is a chance in a practice game to see how we respond, and we scored in the first five minutes of the second half."
That goal, same as the first, came off the foot of Davis, whose 55th-minute goal proved the game-winner. The assist came from Teeter, who after taking control of the ball after an ACU turnover delivered a perfect cross to Davis, who finished in front of net.
Whereas the latter portion of the first half saw the Wildcats gaining some confidence with persistent – but not fruitful – possession, the second half was all Tech. The Red Raiders dominated the ball and, in the 82nd minute, were rightfully rewarded with an insurance goal. Teeter's score came on a corner kick she herself took from the left side of net. The sophomore's service curved into the box and over the head of Jen Rose, who was stationed near post. In the middle of the pile, her corner deflected off a Wildcat defender and in to double the Tech lead.
Davis' two goals came on four shots in her 74 minutes on the pitch. Teeter had three shots herself, while Rose and Marisa Weichel each had two. Overall, the Red Raiders outshot the Wildcats 17-7.
Returning Big 12 Freshman of the Year Madison White played 85 minutes in net. She made one save, stretching out to punch away a Wildcat shot heading for the upper-right corner. With five minutes remaining, White was relieved by Madison Martin, who was making her Tech debut and took over in net for the remainder of the game.
Martin was one of four to play her first minutes in a Red Raider uniform, the others being Taya Lopez, Avery Chaney and Madison Michel.
Tech will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 29, when they head to Bossier City, La., to play LSU. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
