Aberg Shines in Opening Round of Amer Ari Intercollegiate

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii – Texas Tech freshman Ludvig Aberg caught fire to shoot a 6-under-par 66 in the opening round of the Amer Ari Intercollegiate to lead the Red Raiders who will go into the second of three rounds in fifth place at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.
Aberg is in fourth place and led the Red Raiders who finished at 10-under on Thursday, while senior Sandy Scott is in 10th on the individual leaderboard after shooting 4-under (68) in his first round. Tech is just four strokes behind tournament leaders No. 3-ranked Georgia Tech and No. 25 Texas which both finished with opening rounds of 274 (14-under). No. 10 Arizona State is in third place at 13-under followed by Oklahoma State (12-under).
Texas Tech, which won a program-best three fall tournaments, led the 20-team field in Hawaii with 27 birdies as a team during Thursday's opening round that started the spring season.
Aberg matched his career-low round with the 66 after making nine birdies, including shooting 8-under on his final nine holes and 4-under on par 5s. The stretch started with three straight birdies on 12-14 and was completed by making birdie on his final two holes of the day. Aberg, who won the Sun Bowl Classic in El Paso after the completion of the fall collegiate season, also had a 66 in the final round of the Iverness Intercollegiate for his only prior sub-70 round as a Red Raider. His nine birdies on Thursday were tied for the first-round most along with Aman Gupta (Oklahoma State) and Tyler Strafaci (Georgia Tech).
Markus Braadlie, who is playing the tournament as an individual, is in seventh overall at 5-under following a six-birdie, one-bogey round.
Scott made six birdies to complete his opening round at 3-under, while Kyle Hogan and Andy Lopez both finished their opening rounds at even-par which puts them at 50th on the leaderboard. TTU freshman Garrett Martin is one shot back of them after carding a 1-over 73 with four birdies on his scorecard, but also three bogeys and a double bogey. Hogan's even-par round came with three birdies and three bogeys, while Lopez made four birdies, two bogeys, one double bogey and 11 pars. Hogan and Braadlie each had 12 pars in their rounds to lead the Red Raiders in that stat.
Strafaci leads the Amer Ari Intercollegiate at 8-under, followed by Cole Hammer (Texas) and Gupta who finished their opening rounds at 7-under which is one stroke ahead of Aberg going into Friday's second round. Aberg is playing in his fourth stroke play event as a Red Raider with his top finish coming at 2th individually at The Carmel Cup to start the fall season.
The tournament is scheduled to resume at 11:30 a.m. (CST) on Friday with the final round on Saturday at the same time with a shot gun start.
The Amer Ari Intercollegiate is the start of a six-tournament spring schedule that will lead into the Big 12 Championship on April 27-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Red Raiders will return from Hawaii to compete at The Prestige on Feb. 17-19 in Palm Springs, California.
