Hogan Leads No. 5 Red Raiders During First Day of Southern Highlands

LAS VEGAS – Texas Tech will go into the second round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate in fourth place and Kyle Hogan is tied for 10th after Sunday's opening round at the Southern Highlands Golf Club.
Hogan shot an even-par 72 for the No. 5-ranked Red Raiders who finished with a 295 which puts them eight behind tournament leader Southern California. The second round of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CST) on Monday with the final round on Tuesday. Hogan is five shots back of tournament leaders Davis Thompson (Georgia) and Yuxin Lin (Southern Cal) who opened the event by shooting 5-under. Texas Tech freshman Ludvig Aberg is in 14th after posting a 1-over 73 followed by Sandy Scott and Andy Lopez who finished at 3-over which puts them in 27th.
Southern Cal, which is ranked No. 36 in the Golfstat rankings, was the only team in the 15-team field to shot under-par in the opening round of the 54-hole tournament and leads No. 8 Texas which is in second place after posting 4-over and No. 22 UCLA's 5-over scorecard. Texas Tech is tied with No. 26 Florida and ahead of No. 16 Georgia (295), No. 2 Oklahoma (298) and No. 10 SMU (300). Top-ranked Pepperdine is currently in 12th at the tournament after posting 16-over which is two shots ahead of No. 3 Georgia Tech.
Hogan carded his even-par round after finishing the day with five birdies, eight pars and five bogeys, while Aberg shot 1-over with two birdies on his scorecard. Scott and Lopez had different scorecards despite the 3-over totals with Scott finishing with six birdies and Lopez only one. Scott had one bogey, one double bogey and a triple bogey to fall back on the first day and Lopez had 13 pars to go along with four bogeys during his round. Braadlie is at 6-over going into Monday following a round where he recorded 13 pars, four bogeys and a double. A junior from Cypress, Hogan is coming off a fall where he finished third at the Iverness and Tavistock for his top finishes this season.Â
Texas Tech leads the tournament at 2-under on par 5s after the final round and finished the day with 14 birdies and 55 pars as a team. The Red Raiders, who won three fall tournaments, finished fourth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate last season.Â
For the second time, the individual Southern Highlands champion will receive an exemption into the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will take place Oct. 8-11, 2020, at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. Co-designed by golf architect Robert Trent Jones, the Southern Highlands Golf Club is a challenging test that features views of the Las Vegas Strip. The field for this year's college event, hosted by UNLV, features major golf programs from the SEC, ACC, Big 12, and Pac 12 conferences, including six of this season's top seven squads. Coverage for the livestream will be provided by PGA Tour favorite Ricky Barnes, broadcaster Taylor Zarzour and on-course reporter Diane Knox. Former winners of this event include: Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, David Duval, Ryan Moore and David Gossett. Other PGA Tour veterans to play include Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Patrick Rodgers and Rich Beem.
The Southern Highlands Collegiate is the third of a six-tournament spring schedule that will lead into the Big 12 Championship on April 27-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Red Raiders will return from Nevada to compete at the Grand Canyon Invitational from March 13-14 in Phoenix, Arizona.
