Matt and Jen Wells provided a significant gift Friday to start the fundraising efforts for response fund
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head football coach Matt Wells and his wife Jen kicked off fundraising efforts for the South Plains COVID-19 Response Fund that was announced Friday morning by City of Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope.
The Wells family provided a significant gift to the response fund, which is part of a partnership between the Community Foundation of West Texas and the Lubbock Area United Way. It is intended to rapidly deploy resources to community-based organizations who are tackling the effects of the coronavirus outbreak in the region.
"We really wanted to give back and start this campaign off on the right foot," Wells said. "Jen and I have thought about this, have prayed about it and feel blessed in the support we've received from Lubbock and Red Raider Nation in the last year we've been here. To be able to give back to the people around here and these non-profits, and for them to use it in a right way is something we want to do."
The response fund was started to provide flexible resources to non-profits working with local communities that are disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus and the economic consequences of the outbreak. Gifts to the response fund will help South Plains communities respond to both the immediate and long-term needs that will arise from this crisis.
Gifts may be made online here or at any local United Supermarkets location in Lubbock, Levelland, Post, Plainview or Slaton. Guests will be able to give in stores from March 28 through April 10.
