March 09, 2020 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball senior Brittany Brewer has been named Academic All-America Team Member of the Year for Division I Women's Basketball, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Monday.
Â
The Academic All-America Team Member of the Year award is given each year to the top performing member of the Academic All-American first team in each sport. It is the top honor awarded by CoSIDA in its Academic All-America program.
Â
Brewer is the first player in program history to be named First Team Academic All-American in back-to-back years, and is also the first Lady Raider to earn the distinction of Team Member of the Year.
Â
A native of Abilene, Texas, Brewer is pursuing a graduate degree after graduating with her bachelor's in community, family & addiction sciences last summer. She becomes a two-time First Team Academic All-America selection after also earning the honor in 2018-19. Brewer carries a 3.66 GPA in her graduate course work after earning a 4.0 as an undergrad.
Â
Brewer was recently named one of 10 finalists for Lisa Leslie Award as one of the top center in the country, and was also named a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award. She ranks second in the country averaging 4.38 blocks a game, while scoring 16.6 points and grabbing 10.3 rebounds for the Red Raiders. Earlier this season she tied the Division I record when she blocked 16 shots against Louisiana Monroe in a 12-point, 14-rebound, 16-block triple double.
Â
Along with Brewer, the Academic All-America® Division I Women's Basketball teams have four other repeat performers from last year's teams – Becca Hittner (Drake University), Ciara Duffy (University of South Dakota), Mikayla Pivec (Oregon State University), and Sara Rhine (Drake University). Additionally, Duffy and Rhine were named to the 2017-18 Academic All-America® team.
Â
To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average, appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games and be named to a CoSIDA All-District Team.
