April 17, 2020 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball standout Brittany Brewer was selected 17th overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2020 WNBA Draft on Friday night. Brewer marks the first Lady Raider draft pick in 14 years and the highest draft pick since Plenette Pierson 17 years ago.
Â
Brewer is also head coach Marlene Stollings' sixth WNBA Draft pick in the last six seasons.
Â
An Abilene, Texas, native, Brewer proved herself as one of the best players in the country during her senior season, and was the only player in Division I women's basketball to average better than 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game.
Â
Brewer was named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press, Women's Basketball Coaches Association and U.S. Basketball Writers Association. She was the program's first All-American in 14 seasons.
Â
Brewer was named a finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award given to the best center in the country, and also was a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award. She was also named a First Team All-Big 12 recipient for the first time in her career and also made the Big 12 All-Defensive Team.
Â
She broke the school record for blocks in a season with 127, averaging 4.4 on the year to rank second in the country and first among Power Five players. The senior had a career high 15 double-doubles on the season to rank fifth in the Big 12 and 22nd among NCAA DI players. She also turned in the first triple double by a Lady Raider in 22 years, recording 12 points, 14 rebounds and an NCAA-record tying 16 blocks in the Texas Tech win over Louisiana Monroe.
Â
This spring, Brewer became the first player in program history to be named a First Team Academic All-American twice, and was also the first player in school history to be named CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year.
