A Different Kind of Senior Day
May 01, 2020 | Cross Country, Track and Field
Texas Tech honors 16 seniors in photo feature story.
Under normal circumstances, 16 seniors from the Texas Tech track & field program would be preparing today to be celebrated prior to their final home meet as Red Raiders. Titled the Corky/Crofoot Shootout, the last regular season meet has come to serve a bigger purpose than offering the potential for last-chance conference or regional qualifying marks; it presents Tech's class of seniors the opportunity to walk with their families to the middle of the track, while the public address announcer lists off their career highlights and post-graduation plans in front of an appreciative home crowd. Upon meeting their event coach on the track, the senior receives a framed jersey to commemorate their time representing Texas Tech.
While these seniors will still receive their framed jerseys — and, undoubtedly, kind words from their coaches and families — the current situation makes it possible one essential part of Senior Day festivities could be left out: the public recognition of their accomplishments while competing at the highest level collegiate track & field has to offer.
