U.S. Amateur Championship Update

BANDON, Oregon – Texas Tech rising senior Andy Lopez and returning senior Sandy Scott have advanced to match play in the U.S. Amateur Championship while Jansen Smith and Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas will be in a playoff on Wednesday morning for three remaining spots at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
Smith and Meen Fosaas finished the two-day stroke-play portion at 2-over and are tied with 18 other players. The U.S. Amateur Championship will be cut from 264 players to 64 following the completion of the playoff with match play beginning after the playoff. Lopez finished the stroke-play portion of the event at 3-under which had him in 18th place, while Scott was at even-par to advance. Scott finished stroke play in 36th place.
Lopez, who earned All-American honors last season, led Texas Tech during the first two days of stroke play by shooting 3-under to reach match play. He would card a 71 on Tuesday which put him in 17th place going into match play. Lopez finished his opening round on Monday with five birdies, including three on the back-9 to shoot 69. Scott would shoot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday after a 73 during Monday's round. For his first two rounds, he was at even-par with five birdies on his card on Tuesday's final stroke play round. A two-time All-American and currently at No. 6 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Scott announced his return to Texas Tech last month.
Smith and Meen Fosaas both finished at 2-over in stroke play. A rising junior from San Angelo, Smith was 2-over on Tuesday while Meen Fosaas was 3-over. Meen Fosaas, who is from Norway and redshirted last season after transferring from Keiser (NAIA), finished at 1-under after making four birdies and an eagle in his first U.S. Amateur. Smith was at 3-under through nine holes before four bogeys and a birdie evened his opening round.
Markus Braadlie, Kyle Hogan and Garrett Martin each missed the cut in the tournament.
