Soccer Begins Preseason Practices

Red Raiders commence preseason Tuesday at John Walker Soccer Complex.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Soccer began its fall preseason Tuesday at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The practice marked the first official training session of the 2020 season.
"It's truly amazing to be back on the field with these girls," said head coach Tom Stone. "We've been missing seeing them play and being able to work with them. The first day after five months off is never easy, but we kept it short, gave them room to shake the rust off and tried not to over-coach. It wasn't a typical first day, but it was a great start to getting us back to where we need to be."
Returning to campus for Tuesday's practice was eight of 11 starters a squad which last year came just two points from its first Big 12 regular season title in program history. The Red Raiders, who went 15-4-3, climbed as high as No. 13 in the national polls twice before rounding out the campaign in the No. 20 spot.
Tech's attack is primed to be one of the most potent in the country with returning First Team All-American and MAC Hermann semifinalist Kirsten Davis primed for her final season as a Red Raider. The senior will be joined up top by the team's top scorers from 2016 and 2017 in Jade King and Ally Griffin. King missed all of conference play last fall after tearing her ACL, and Griffin missed the entire year due to an injury. The duo will be fed and joined in goal scoring by the likes of All-Midwest midfielder Jordie Harr, junior Charlotte Teeter and TopDrawerSoccer.com Top-100 Freshman Macy Schultz.
A stingy Red Raider defense will look to make it three straight years atop the Big 12 in goals against. Third Team All-American Cassie Hiatt will captain the back line along with last season's unanimous Freshman All-Big 12 Hannah Anderson at the center back position. Stone's options on the outside will be highlighted by senior Amanda Porter, who started in nearly every game last fall after transferring in from Arizona, and Margaret Begley, the first sixth-year in program history. Luana Munoz will step into the back line as well, surely to see time with highly-touted freshman Briley Weatherford, who was a four-time All-American at Hebron while playing for FC Dallas.
Stepping between the posts will be Madison White, the reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year. White's dramatic takeover of the starting goalkeeper position and subsequent performances gained constant attention from national and local outlets last season. White was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week once and made the Team of the Week three times. She tied a Big 12 record for most weekly awards with six. White will be backed up by junior college All-American Sydney Malmstrom, a 6-foot-2 product of Tyler JC who last year led the Apaches to their fourth NJCAA Championship.
Welcome back, team. ??
