Scott Shoots 75 in U.S. Open First Round
September 17, 2020 | Men's Golf
MAMARONECK, New York – Sandy Scott was at 1-under-par and in seventh place through his first 11 holes at the 120th U.S. Open Championship before finishing with a 5-over, 75 on Thursday in the opening round at Winged Foot Golf Club.Â
"We got off to a good start with some nice pars and a couple birdies," Scott said. "I was playing nice by hitting fairways and greens to give myself chances. I started missing them at the end there. Overall it was solid."
Justin Thomas leads the championship at 5-under par followed by Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters and Matthew Wolff who each shot 4-under in the opening round. Scott is tied for 109th at 5-over along Ian Poulter, Kevin Na and Keegan Bradley.
Playing in his first U.S. Open, Scott started his round with six straight pars and would birdie No. 9 (par-5, 566 yards) to move back to even after a bogey on No. 3. His first birdie of the day started with a 360-yard drive on the fairway before a 16-yard chip shot set up a 2-foot tap-in. He would stay at even-par with a par on No. 10 before entering the top of the leaderboard with a birdie on No. 11 by knocking in a 12-foot birdie putt.
Scott would close out his round shooting 6-over through his final seven holes with four bogeys and a double on No. 14. He completed the day hitting 43 percent of fairways and 56 percent of greens in regulations.
"If you're under-par through as many holes as I was you know you're playing good golf," Scott said. "I was just trying to stick to the process that we had committed to. I started missing some fairways with the driver going left on me on the back-9. I was just scrambling for pars because I was missing the fairways."
Scott is scheduled to start his second round at 1 p.m. (CDT) on Friday. He'll begin on No. 10 paired again with Kurt Kitayma (even-par) and Robert MacIntyre (4-over).
"I feel like we've prepared well and that I'm hitting the ball pretty good," Scott said. "There's not much else to do today to prepare for tomorrow, so I'll look at the course guide again tonight and visualize the wind. We'll be ready to go again."
