Lady Raiders Start Strong at West Texas Pro Tennis Open

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team started the weekend strong at the West Texas Pro Tennis Open on Friday, with four of five Lady Raiders still competing heading into Saturday's competition.

Lady Raiders Nell Miller and Kaitlin Staines will compete in the round of 16 on Saturday morning after picking up straight-set wins on Friday.

Miller, the draw's 12th seed, handled Reya Coe, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 32 after receiving a bye in the round of 64 to advance to Saturday's action. The Lady Raider will meet Andrea Villarreal on Saturday at 8 a.m.

 Staines defeated Mchaley Ho, 6-2, 6-4, in her round of 32 match to move on. She will take on Savannah Broadus at 8 a.m.

Freshman Camryn Stepp went 1-1 in her first action as a Lady Raider. Stepp opened the event with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Zoe Gubbels before falling in the round of 32 to 10th-seeded Ivana Corley.

Lady Raiders Olivia Peet and Olivia Mikkelson found success in the tournament backdraw after tough starts to their weekend in the first round of action.

After falling to 15th-seeded Jessie Aney, Mikkelson dropped Regina Herrera, 6-1, 6-3, to set up a matchup with Hannah Quick on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Peet bounced back from a three-set loss to Tomi Main with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Karin Young to advance to the backdraw quarterfinals. She will play the winner of Mikkelson and Quick on Saturday at 3 p.m.
