Red Raiders to Begin Fall Golf Season at Colonial
September 25, 2020 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's golf team will open its season by playing at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. The 54-hole tournament will consist of every Big 12 team playing in the stroke-play event leading up to next week's match play tournament.Â
The Red Raiders are coming off a pandemic-shortened season where they were ranked No. 3 nationally and are scheduled to play four tournaments this fall. The team will travel to Hockley next weekend to play in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament where they are reigning champion. Along with the first two events, TTU will play at the Maridoe Collegiate (Oct. 16-20) in Carrollton and then at the East Lake Cup from Oct. 26-28 in Atlanta.
The team will begin with 36 holes on Monday and then 18 on Tuesday at Colonial in a return to play that comes after the historic 2019-20 season was ended prematurely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Texas Tech is represented in the season-opening tournament by Sandy Scott, Ludvig Aberg, Andy Lopez, Baard Skogen, Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas, Garrett Martin and JP Roller. Scott, a two-time All-American, returns for his second senior season along with fellow All-American Lopez while Martin and Aberg begin their sophomore seasons. Meen Fosaas played in the U.S. Amateur Championship this summer and makes his TTU debut after transferring in as a junior, while Skogen and Roller are freshmen playing in their first collegiate tournaments. Texas Tech coach Greg Sands begins his 20th season leading the program after being named the 2019-20 GCAA Central Region Coach of the Year.
Scott and Aberg were both named to the Haskins Award Watch List on Thursday leading into the season.Â
The Big 12 has arguably been the best golf conference in the country over the past 10 years with three national championships and four runner-up finishes. To begin the 2020-21 season, five of the 10 Big 12 teams playing this week are ranked in the NCAA DI Top 25. Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St. and Baylor. Eight of the players are ranked in the Top 40 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings, led by Scott and including Pierceson Coody (Texas) #9, Cole Hammer (Texas) #20, Aberg at No. 21, Quade Cummins (OU) #23, Austin Eckroat (OSU) #25, and Cooper Dossey (BU) #33.
The Red Raiders began last season by winning The Carmel Cup, Iverness and Big 12 Match Play to begin their historic season. The team finished in the top-5 of six of seven tournaments played before having their season canceled before the start of the Grand Canyon Invitational on March 13. The Colonial is the first tournament back since the pandemic put a halt to a season that resulted in the highest national ranking to finish a season.
