LUBBOCK, Texas – Patrick Mahomes, with the help of backup quarterback Chad Henne, pushed the Kansas City Chiefs back to the AFC Championship Game on Sunday after a 22-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns at Arrowhead Stadium.
Â
This will be the third-consecutive year Mahomes has led the Chiefs to just a win shy of the Super Bowl as Kansas City will face the Buffalo Bills next Sunday back at home. The Chiefs are the first team in AFC history to host three-straight AFC Championship games.
Â
Mahomes completed 21-of-30 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown and also ran three times for 14 yard and another score before leaving the game with what was declared a concussion. According to NFL research, Mahomes joined Hall of Famer Steve Young as the only players in league history to throw for and rush for a touchdown in three-consecutive playoff games.
Â
The Chiefs found the end zone on back-to-back possessions to start the game as Mahomes completed 11 of his first 12 passes. The former Texas Tech signal caller ran for Kansas City's first touchdown and then found Travis Kelce in the flat in what ultimately resulted in a 20-yard scoring strike.
Â
Mahomes, who suffered a foot injury earlier in the game, left the game midway through the third, turning the game over to Henne with the Chiefs leading, 19-10, and driving to an eventual Harrison Butker 33-yard field goal. Henne completed 6-of-8 passes for 66 yards, none probably more important than the 5-yard pass to Tyrique Hill on a key 4th-and-1 conversion to seal the win with over a minute to play.
Â
Mahomes will look to bounce back in time to face a Bills organization that features another former Red Raider quarterback in Davis Webb, who is currently on Buffalo's practice squad. The Chiefs topped the Bills, 26-17, earlier this season in Buffalo.
Â
Kickoff for the AFC Championship game is slated for 5:40 p.m. CT on CBS.
