Patrick Mahomes threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns to lead Kansas City to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances
LUBBOCK, Texas – Two-possession deficits have proved to mean nothing to Patrick Mahomes II and the Kansas City Chiefs the past two postseasons.
Â
The Chiefs, backed by 325 passing yards from Mahomes, erased an early 9-0 deficit to return to the Super Bowl for a second-consecutive season Sunday night following a 38-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
Â
With the win, Mahomes becomes the youngest quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances as the Chiefs will now face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their home stadium on Feb. 7. Brady was the last quarterback to lead a team to back-to-back Super Bowl titles after leading the New England Patriots to world championships in 2004-05.
Mahomes threw for three touchdowns to help Kansas City outscore the Bills, 38-15, following the start of the second quarter. Mahomes connected with Mecole Hardman on a screen pass for the Chiefs' first touchdown early in the second quarter and then tossed an under-hand shuttle pass to Travis Kelce late in the third to break the game open with a 31-15 lead.
Â
He found Kelce again on an easy five-yard scoring strike midway through the fourth quarter to all but seal the win with Kansas City leading, 38-15, with 7:36 remaining. Over his three AFC Championship starts now in his career, Mahomes has thrown for 914 yards with nine touchdowns and no interceptions.
Â
According to ESPN Stats and Info, Mahomes is the first quarterback in NFL history to record multiple conference championship games with at least three passing touchdowns and no interceptions. He joins Joe Montana as the only two players with three passing touchdowns in three conference championship games.
Â
The Chiefs, who became the first team in history to host three-straight AFC Championships, rolled off 21-straight points in the second quarter to take a 21-12 halftime lead. It marked the fourth-straight postseason game Kansas City has scored at least 21-consecutive points, which includes its Super Bowl LIV win over the San Francisco 49ers a year ago.
Â
This is the 12th-consecutive season where a Red Raider has appeared in a Super Bowl as Mahomes will look to become the fifth Texas Tech alumnus to secure two titles, joining the likes of Danny Amendola, Donny Anderson, Anthony Lynn and LaAdrian Waddle.
Â
Super Bowl LV is slated for a 5:30 p.m. CT kickoff on Feb. 7 with television coverage provided on CBS.
