January 30, 2021 | Women's Golf
Garcia was selected to the prestigious amateur event for a second-straight year this week
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior golfer Sofia Garcia has accepted an invitation to the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur, which will take place April 1-4 at possibly the country's most famous course.
Â
This will be the second-consecutive year Garcia has been selected to travel to Augusta as she was previously picked for the 2020 event that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Garcia is one of 65 players of the eventual 72-player field to have already accepted her invitation.
Â
The tournament will feature 54 holes of stroke play with a cut taking place after 36 holes, advancing the top-30 players to the final round. The first 36 holes will be contested on the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta before moving to Augusta National for the final round on April 4. The entire field will play a practice round at Augusta National on April 3. Â
Â
The individual champion will receive an invitation to the next five Augusta National Women's Amateurs, provided she remain an amateur, as well as the 2021 U.S. Women's Open, the 2021 Women's British Open and any USGA, R&A and PGA of America amateur championships for which she is eligible for one year.
Â
Garcia is no stranger to playing in prestigious amateur events throughout her Red Raider career as she most recently participated in the Arnold Palmer Cup in December. Garcia, playing in the event for a second-straight year, helped push the international team to a victory over its American counterparts at Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando.
Â
As a Red Raider, Garcia is averaging a team-leading 72.0 strokes per round this season entering Monday's spring opener at the Trinity Forest Invitational hosted by SMU in Dallas. Garcia, who was ranked No. 21 in the final Golfstat poll of the fall, has compiled a 72.1 clip over her career, which is on pace to easily be the lowest by a Red Raider in program history.
Â
The Red Raiders are slated for an 8:30 a.m. tee time Monday morning from Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas.
