No. 10 Red Raiders Open Big 12 Match Play Tournament With Two Wins

HOCKLEY, Texas – No. 10 Texas Tech rolled to a pair of wins over Kansas and West Virginia on the opening day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Monday at The Clubs at Houston Oaks. The Red Raiders started with a 4-2-0 win over Kansas before moving to 2-0 in the tournament with a dominant 5-1-0 victory over West Virginia. Â
TTU will resume play at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Kansas State.Â
Texas Tech opened the Big 12 Match Play Tournament with a 4-2-0 win over Kansas in the morning session. The Red Raiders earned wins from Ludvig Aberg, Garrett Martin, Baard Skogen and Andy Lopez to get in the win column. Aberg started his event with a 3&2 win, while Lopez and Martin secured 4&2 victories. Skogen claimed a 4&3 win, while Calum Scott dropped a 3&1 decision and Kyle Hogan took a 4&2 loss.
Aberg, Skogen and Martin each moved to 2-0 individually in the tournament with wins against WVU, while Scott and Hogan earned their first wins. Lopez moved to 1-1 with a 4&3 loss. Skogen secured a 2UP win in his match against the Mountaineers and Hogan and Aberg each had 1UP wins. Martin stayed perfect on the day with a 4&2 win and Scott got in the win column with a 6&4 decision.
Texas Tech is joined with a 2-0 record by Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas going into the second of three days. TTU has an 18-hole differential which is third behind OSU at 37 and OU at 24.
During the pool play portion, each team will play four matches. Teams will get three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. At the conclusion of pool play, each team will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on the amount of points accrued. The tournament will be played over three days consisting of pool play for two-and-a-half days (five sessions) followed by a final round the afternoon of day three. Match play will occur during all rounds. Each team match will consist of six individual matches.

The championship match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A with the team with the highest point total from Pool B. The third-place match will be between the teams with the second highest point totals from their respective pools. Each team will participate during the championship afternoon.
TTU, which is ranked No. 10 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, won the 2019 Big 12 Match Play Tournament. Baylor is the defending champion of the tournament while also winning the inaugural event in 2018. The Big 12 Match Play Tournament is the final fall tournament for the Red Raiders who will return to competition in February at the Ameri Ari in Hawaii.
