October 29, 2021 | Men's Golf
SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda – Texas Tech junior Ludvig Aberg is in contention at the PGA Tour's Butterfield Bermuda Championship where he is tied for 10th at 6-under-par through two rounds, while former Red Raider Mito Pereira is at 1-under going into the weekend at the Port Royal Golf Course. The tournament will be broadcasted from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday on the Golf Channel.
Taylor Pendrith leads the PGA Tour event at 11-under after shooting a tournament record 61 (10-under) on Friday, while Patrick Rodgers is in second at 10-under.
Aberg shot his second straight round of 68 on Friday to move to his 6-under, while Pereira is at 1-under following shooting a 68 of his own in the second round. Aberg recorded three birdies and made eagle on the par-5, No. 7 hole. Pereira made four birdies and 13 pars in his round of 3-under after he had shot a 73 on Thursday.Â
Aberg, who is playing as an amateur with a sponsor's exemption, completed 17 holes on Thursday before play was suspended due to darkness in his first PGA Tour round. He began Friday by making a birdie to finish the round at 3-under, 68. Aberg is currently No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and began his tournament by shooting 4-under on his opening 12 holes before a pair of bogeys set him back a couple shots.
Pereira earned his PGA Tour card through a three-win promotion from the Korn Ferry Tour this summer and also had a shining moment in the Olympics where he was in a playoff for the bronze medal. He finished third at the Fortinet Championship in September for his best finish on Tour. Pereira was tied for 63rd after shooting a 73 with three birdies on his scorecard in the first round before shooting 3-under on Friday.
Along with competing in the Bermuda Championship, Aberg will play in the RSM Classic in mid-November at Sea Island. He earned the spot in the tournament by winning the 2021 Jones Cup Invitational. The No. 11 Red Raiders completed their fall schedule and will return to action in February in Hawaii to begin the spring schedule.
