February 13, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team completed the upset of No. 23 Arizona State on Saturday in a 4-3 thriller at Lubbock Country Club.
Â
With no Lisa Mays, who had started at the No. 1 singles spot in every match for the Lady Raiders so far this season, Texas Tech overcame a slow start in doubles to come back and take four of six singles matches to clinch the win.
Â
The Sun Devils struck first, picking up wins on courts one and three to take an early 1-0 lead. When matches were suspended, Margarita Skriabina and Olivia Peet were tied at five apiece with Arizona State's Tereza Kolarova and Giulia Morlet.
Â
The Lady Raiders gained momentum in singles, picking up three-straight wins to take a 3-1 lead over the Sun Devils.
Â
Peet was the first Lady Raider to get on the board, knocking off Giulia Morlet, 6-1, 6-2, on line four to tie the match at one. The win moved Peet to 4-0 on the season in dual matches.
Â
Kaitlin Staines earned a clutch win in the top singles spot as she defeated No. 37 Ilze Hattingh in three sets. After falling, 1-6, in her first set, Staines won the second set, 6-2, and the third, 6-0, to take the win and give the Lady Raiders the lead.
Â
Skriabina followed suit shortly after with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Lauryn John-Baptiste to push her dual record to 3-0 this season.
Â
After Arizona State picked up a pair of wins on courts two and six, the match was left to be decided on singles line five, where Metka Komac was in a battle with Marianna Argyrokastriti. Komac came up with the 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win to clinch the win for Texas Tech.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be back in action next weekend, when they host SMU, New Mexico and Abilene Christian at home.
