Hogan, Lopez Ready To Begin Spring Season
February 09, 2021 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's golf team will begin its spring season at The Prestige which is being played at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in Palm Springs, California.
Tech comes into the season with high expectations being ranked No. 9 in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll and currently at No. 24 in Golfstat rankings. The Red Raiders finished last season ranked No. 3 in the polls and will look to replicate that this time around. The three-day tournament begins on Monday, Feb. 15 before the final round on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Seniors Kyle Hogan and Andy Lopez are excited for the season and both noted how lucky they are to be able to play in tournaments this season since COVID shut their season short last year. The seniors also noted that they expect their attitude to be better this time around as opposed to in the fall.
"One of the major improvements (for our team) is attitude," Lopez said. "We weren't too happy about the COVID rules and so we had that in our minds. These past few weeks we've been working on our attitude. Having a more positive attitude on the course and off the course and I think those keys will definitely help us be successful in the season."
Hogan, who won the Maridoe individual championship and played in the Houston Open last season and is someone that Lopez said he expects to step up this year, said that attitude is something that can always be improved and controlled.
"I think attitude is something you can always improve. It's something that you can get an edge on other players in programs on. It's something you have complete control of," Hogan said. "While we're playing in some difficult conditions, the wind and cold, it's a great chance to work on (attitude) and try to have a positive attitude so when you are at a nice place with nice weather it's super easy to do."
Lopez will enter the spring season ranked as the No. 154 golfer in the country. Lopez was among seven Tech golfers to be ranked in the Golfstat's top-250 players this season. The second-highest ranked Tech player, sophomore Ludvig Aberg coming in at No. 107, is someone that Hogan thinks will have a good spring season.
"One person that I think should have a really good season is going to be Ludvig (Aberg)," Hogan said. "He won a tournament about a year ago, last winter break, and he hasn't really had the success I know he wishes and he can in college. I am expecting him to put it together and have a really good spring semester."
The team's motto this semester is S.W.A.T. which Lopez explained as serving others, working hard, making sure their attitude is great and being thankful to everyone around them.
The Red Raiders will follow up their tournament in Palm Springs with three tournaments in Texas starting with the Cabo Collegiate at the TPC San Antonio in San Antonio (March 1-3) followed by the Texas Invitational at the UT Golf Club in Austin (March 15-16) and the Aggie Invitational at the Traditions Club in College Station (April 9-11). Tech will then travel to Phoenix Arizona to take part in the Thunderbird Collegiate (April 16-17) and end the season with the Big 12 Men's Golf Championship in Hutchinson, Kansas.
