Gray Earns First Team All-Big 12 Honors
March 10, 2021 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – For the third time in her career, Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball senior Vivian Gray has been named to the All-Big 12 First Team, the conference announced on Wednesday. Gray is the only player on the list who has been named to the first team each of the last three seasons.
Â
In the midst of another outstanding season, the two-time honorable mention All-American has made her case for another All-America honor as a senior, averaging career highs of 20.0 points and 8.2 rebounds, along with 3.0 assists per game. The Argyle, Texas, product is also averaging 1.6 blocks per game—also a career high—and 1.4 steals per game.
Â
Gray is the only player in the country averaging at least 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the country, and is on pace to be the first Big 12 player to finish the season with those averages since All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year Bridget Carleton of Iowa State in 2018-19, per HerHoopStats.com.
Â
Gray was a Preseason All-Big 12 selection heading into the season and was a top-10 finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award, which is given to the top small forward in the nation.
Â
One of two Big 12 players this season to record double-doubles of both points-rebounds and points-assists, Gray has recorded eight double-doubles this season, and has turned in 13 20-point games this season to tie for third in the Big 12.
Â
Gray's career high 38 points against Kansas were the second-most in a Big 12 game this season, and were the most points in a double-double in Big 12 game this season, earning her Big 12 Player of the Week recognition in the effort.
Â
Defensively, Gray has led Texas Tech in steals 11 times this season and blocks 12 times, with 12 games of multiple steals and 10 games of multiple blocks. That includes three games matching her career high of four blocks and four games of three steals. Her 1.6 blocks per game ranks first among non-post players in the conference and fourth overall.
Â
Gray and the Lady Raiders will be back in action on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo., when they open play at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championships against Kansas State.
