Jung named Player of the Week, Monteverde tabbed Newcomer of the Week
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball's Jace Jung and Patrick Monteverde were recognized by the conference office for their play last week as Jung was named Big 12 Player of the week while Monteverde was tabbed Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Â
It's the first time this season a Red Raider has earned a Big 12 weekly award. The Red Raiders went 5-0 last week, including their first 3-0 showing at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in four trips.
Â
This is the first-career Player of the Week honor for Jung, who received a Newcomer of the Week award last season following opening weekend. It's also the first recognition for Monteverde, a grad transfer from D-II Seton Hill.
Â
Jung led the conference with 14 RBIs and ranked in the top-two in the league last week in hits (8), runs (8), homers (3), slugging percentage (1.118) and total bases (19). He hit the go-ahead three-run double in the seventh inning Sunday against TAMUCC, while his five-RBI game against Texas Southern on March 3 matched the most by a Big 12 player this season.
Â
Monteverde tossed seven shutout innings in the victory over Sam Houston State at the Shriners Hospitals College Classic. He struck out nine and did not issue a walk. He has not allowed a run in 18.0 innings across three starts, becoming the first Red Raider since Dominic Moreno in 2015 with a scoreless streak of more than 15 innings.
Â
The No. 10 Red Raiders return to action tomorrow as they open a 12-game home stand against Gonzaga. First pitch at Rip Griffin Park is set for 6:30 p.m. on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
